What happens if my NREMT expires?
If you finished your continuing education by the deadline but did not submit the application, you can still reinstate: until April 30 for EMT, AEMT and Paramedic or October 31 for EMR, for a $50 late fee on top of the recertification fee. If you did not finish the education, the National Registry certification lapses, and in the 14 states that require current NREMT to renew, the state license goes with it.

Questions
When does my NREMT expire?
EMT, AEMT and Paramedic certifications expire on March 31 of the expiration year; EMR expires September 30 of the expiration year. The date is printed on your card and shown in your nremt.org account. Once a recertification is approved, the new expiration is two years after the current one.
Can I still submit if I finished my CE but missed the deadline?
Yes, that is what reinstatement is for. If all education was finished by the deadline but the application was not submitted, you can reinstate until April 30 (EMT, AEMT, Paramedic) or October 31 (EMR) for a $50 fee plus the recertification fee.
What if I did not finish the CE in time?
Then the certification lapses. The path back is set by the National Registry for each level and is not summarized here; the official recertification page for your level, linked below, is the source. Keep your CE documentation for 36 months in any case: audits are random.
Does my state license lapse too?
In states that require current National Registry certification to renew, yes: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia. In states where NREMT is one optional pathway, or where the state runs its own cycle, your state license has its own expiration and its own rules.
